EPILOGUE — THE PRICE OF SAFETY

EPILOGUE — THE PRICE OF SAFETY

Mark Keller disappeared from my life that night.

Not in the way people disappear when they run.

In the way they disappear when they understand they no longer have permission to return.

Noah spoke his first full sentence two days later.

It wasn’t much.

But it was enough.

Vincent never asked me for anything in return.

Not once.

But sometimes, late at night, when I closed the restaurant and stepped outside into the quiet Chicago air, I would see his car parked across the street.

Engine running.

Waiting.

Not like a cage.

Like a decision that had already been made.

And I finally understood something no one had told me before:

Some monsters don’t destroy you.

May you like

Some of them look at your broken pieces…

…and decide no one else will ever touch you again.
