Chapter 2: The Son Who Finally Saw the Truth

"This stopped being your house the moment you raised your hand against my wife."

Daniel's voice was quiet.

That frightened Margaret more than if he had screamed.

For the first time in his life, his mother had no control over the room.

She stared at him in disbelief.

"You would choose her over your own mother?"

Daniel never looked away from Ava.

"I am choosing the truth."

He carefully lifted Ava into his arms while another housekeeper rushed to help Rosa stand.

"Call an ambulance," Daniel ordered.

Then he looked at the estate's head of security, Marcus, who had just arrived after hearing the commotion.

"Lock every gate."

Margaret frowned.

"What nonsense is this?"

"No one leaves."

Marcus hesitated only a second.

"Yes, Mr. Sterling."

Margaret's confidence began to crack.

"You can't possibly think I'd hurt her."

Daniel slowly stood.

"I don't think."

"I know."

He walked to the study desk and picked up the blue trust folder.

Inside were legal documents transferring control of Ava's inheritance to a charitable foundation managed solely by Margaret.

Forged signatures.

Forged medical evaluations.

Psychiatric reports claiming Ava had become mentally incompetent.

Daniel's stomach twisted.

He recognized one doctor's signature.

The doctor had died eight months ago.

He looked back at Margaret.

"Forgery."

Margaret swallowed.

"You don't understand business."

"I understand prison."

Her face finally lost all color.

Just then Rosa spoke through swollen lips.

"Sir..."

Daniel immediately turned.

"You don't have to force yourself."

She shook her head.

"I recorded everything."

Everyone froze.

Rosa reached into her apron pocket and produced a tiny voice recorder.

"I started recording because Mrs. Margaret kept threatening Miss Ava whenever no one else was around."

Daniel accepted it with trembling hands.

He pressed play.

Margaret's own voice echoed across the silent study.

"Sign the papers or I'll make sure everyone believes you've completely lost your mind."

"No one will ever believe a cripple over me."

"One dose won't kill you... but enough doses will."

The room became deathly still.

Margaret looked as though the ground had disappeared beneath her feet.

Daniel stopped the recording.

"I've spent thirty-six years believing you were the most honorable woman alive."

May you like

His eyes filled with disappointment deeper than anger.

"I never knew you at all."
