Chapter 4: Thirty Seconds Earlier

Chapter 4: Thirty Seconds Earlier

Detective Brooks took the tablet without saying a word.

The hallway outside the emergency waiting room suddenly felt too quiet.

I watched his eyes scan the screen.

His expression changed.

First curiosity.

Then disbelief.

Finally...

Anger.

"What is it?" I asked.

He looked at me.

"I think your brother made a mistake."

"What kind of mistake?"

"The kind people make when they believe no one is watching."

He turned the tablet toward me.

"This footage is difficult to watch."

"I still want to see it."

He nodded.

The video began.

A time stamp appeared in the corner.

6:41:18 PM.

The ballroom buzzed with conversation as guests found their seats.

Children laughed near the dance floor.

Servers carried trays of champagne through the crowd.

Then Preston entered the frame.

He wasn't greeting guests.

He wasn't looking for his bride.

He was walking with purpose.

His eyes scanned the room until they landed on Sophie.

She sat beside me, coloring a picture with purple and blue crayons.

I remembered that moment.

She'd been drawing a castle.

She wanted to show it to the bride after dinner.

The video continued.

Preston glanced over both shoulders.

Once.

Twice.

Making sure no one appeared to be paying attention.

Detective Brooks paused the footage.

"See that?"

I nodded slowly.

"He was checking to see if anyone was watching."

"Exactly."

The video played again.

Preston reached into the inside pocket of his tuxedo jacket.

He pulled out his titanium iPhone.

My breath caught.

He already had it.

The phone had never been missing.

He held it in his right hand for only a second before closing his fingers around it.

Then he smiled.

The warm, friendly smile everyone at the wedding knew so well.

The smile that had fooled people for years.

He knelt beside Sophie.

She looked up from her drawing.

The camera had no audio.

But I could read her lips.

"Hi, Uncle Preston."

She smiled at him.

Completely innocent.

Completely trusting.

He pointed at her drawing.

She proudly held it up.

While she looked at the paper...

His left hand gently lifted the edge of her tiny denim jacket.

His right hand disappeared for less than two seconds.

Then it came back empty.

Detective Brooks froze the frame.

The phone was gone.

I covered my mouth.

"Oh, my God..."

Tears streamed down my face.

"He really did it."

The detective didn't answer immediately.

He zoomed in on the image.

Even enlarged, it was unmistakable.

Preston's hand was inside Sophie's jacket pocket.

"That's enough for probable cause," he said quietly.

"But let's keep watching."

The video resumed.

Preston patted Sophie gently on the shoulder.

She grinned at him.

Then he stood and walked away.

Not hurriedly.

Not nervously.

Confidently.

As though he had just completed something he'd rehearsed.

The timestamp advanced.

6:53:46 PM.

Twelve minutes later...

Preston walked onto the stage.

He reached into his tuxedo pocket.

His smile disappeared.

He pretended to search one pocket.

Then another.

He looked beneath the head table.

Even bent down beside his chair.

Every movement was theatrical.

Every expression carefully timed.

Guests immediately noticed.

The bride leaned toward him, asking something.

He shrugged dramatically.

Then reached for the microphone.

"Ladies and gentlemen..."

I closed my eyes.

"I remember every word."

Detective Brooks lowered the volume.

"You don't have to hear it again."

"No."

I opened my eyes.

"I do."

The audio filled the hallway.

"I'm sorry to interrupt dinner," Preston announced in the recording.

"But something very valuable has just been stolen."

Guests gasped.

"I'd appreciate it if everyone stayed seated."

"I know whoever took it probably made a mistake."

"I'm willing to forgive them."

He paused.

"If they return my phone now."

No one moved.

Because there had never been a thief.

Only a liar.

The video continued.

Preston slowly walked through the ballroom.

Past friends.

Past relatives.

Past the wedding party.

Straight toward our table.

He never searched anyone else.

Never hesitated.

Never questioned another guest.

He already knew where the phone was.

Because he had put it there himself.

Detective Brooks stopped the recording.

"That's enough."

He looked at another officer standing nearby.

"Contact the State's Attorney."

"I want an assistant prosecutor assigned immediately."

The officer nodded and hurried away.

Just then, the automatic doors to the emergency department opened.

A doctor in blue scrubs walked toward me.

For one terrifying second, I forgot about the video.

Forgot about Preston.

Forgot about everything except Sophie.

"Mrs. Carter?"

I stood so quickly my legs nearly gave out.

"Yes."

"I'm Dr. Melissa Grant."

"Your daughter is awake."

Relief flooded through me.

"Can I see her?"

"In a few minutes."

She smiled gently.

"The CT scan shows no skull fracture."

I burst into tears.

"But..."

My heart stopped again.

"There is a moderate concussion."

"She'll need to stay overnight for observation."

I nodded through my tears.

"Will she recover?"

"We expect a full recovery."

The words felt like sunlight after the darkest night of my life.

I whispered a quiet thank you.

Before I could ask another question, Detective Brooks' phone rang.

He answered immediately.

"Brooks."

His expression darkened.

"When?"

He listened for several seconds.

Then looked directly at me.

"What happened?" I asked.

He ended the call.

"That was Officer Ramirez."

"He went back to the hotel."

"Why?"

"To arrest Preston."

My pulse quickened.

"And?"

Brooks' jaw tightened.

"He was gone."

"What do you mean, gone?"

"He disappeared."

The detective's voice grew cold.

"Your brother fled the wedding..."

"...less than three minutes before we obtained the CCTV footage."

Somewhere in Chicago...

Preston already knew the truth had caught up with him.

May you like

And now...

He was running.
