Chapter 2: The Footage Nobody Expected

Chapter 2: The Footage Nobody Expected
The ambulance arrived within minutes.
This time, people moved.
Not because they suddenly cared about Sophie.
Because flashing lights and uniformed officers forced them to.
A paramedic gently examined the cut above Sophie's temple.
"We're taking her to the hospital," he said. "Head injuries aren't something we gamble with."
Sophie squeezed my hand.
"Mommy..."
"Am I in trouble?"
The question hit harder than anything Preston had done.
I kissed her forehead carefully.
"No, sweetheart."
"You've done absolutely nothing wrong."
Across the ballroom, Preston had regained some of his confidence.
He wrapped an arm around his bride as though he were the victim.
Officer Daniel Morris approached him.
"Sir, we need your statement."
Preston nodded dramatically.
"My niece stole my phone."
"When I confronted my sister, she became aggressive."
"The child must have fallen during the argument."
I stared at him.
He had just lied to a police officer without blinking.
My father immediately stepped beside him.
"I witnessed everything."
"My granddaughter stole the phone."
"My son simply tried to retrieve it."
My mother eagerly added,
"My daughter has always been jealous of Preston."
"She's making this into something it isn't."
Three witnesses.
Three identical lies.
The officer turned toward me.
"Ma'am?"
Before I could answer, a calm voice interrupted.
"Actually..."
"I believe the hotel has a much more reliable witness."
Every head turned.
A middle-aged man in a dark navy suit stepped forward.
His name tag read:
Michael Alvarez — Director of Security
He looked directly at Officer Morris.
"Our surveillance cameras recorded the entire reception."
Preston's face lost its color.
"There won't be any need for that," he said quickly.
"It's a family misunderstanding."
Michael didn't even look at him.
"Our cameras record in 4K."
"Audio is synchronized."
"Every entrance."
"Every exit."
"And every table."
The ballroom became eerily quiet.
The officer nodded.
"I'd like to review that footage immediately."
Preston swallowed.
"I... don't consent."
Michael smiled politely.
"You don't have to."
"This is private property."
"And law enforcement has requested evidence involving an assault on a minor."
For the first time in his life...
Preston couldn't charm his way out.
Twenty minutes later...
Inside the hotel's security office...
The truth began to play.
Camera Three showed Sophie sitting beside me almost the entire evening.
Coloring on the back of her menu.
Laughing at the wedding cake.
Never once approaching Preston's table.
Camera Five zoomed toward the head table.
Preston reached into his tuxedo pocket.
Removed his titanium iPhone.
Looked around carefully.
Then casually walked toward our table while everyone watched the couple dance.
He bent down.
Pretended to tie his shoe.
His hand disappeared inside Sophie's denim jacket.
Three seconds later...
He walked away smiling.
The room fell silent.
Officer Morris paused the video.
"Play that back."
Again.
Frame by frame.
The phone clearly disappeared into Sophie's pocket.
No one spoke.
Then Camera Seven showed the confrontation.
Preston accusing Sophie.
Searching the jacket.
"Finding" the phone.
Guests gasping.
My parents immediately blaming an eight-year-old child.
Then came the final recording.
Crystal clear.
Preston ripping the oak menu from its stand.
Swinging it.
The heavy board smashing into Sophie's head.
Blood appearing instantly.
There was no accident.
No misunderstanding.
No self-defense.
Just a grown man attacking a little girl.
Officer Morris slowly stood.
May you like
"Mr. Preston Carter..."
"I'm placing you under arrest."
