Chapter 13 - Three Feet Away.

The emergency lights painted Adrian's face red.

For six weeks, police had searched airports, hotels, rental properties, and every address connected to him.

Now he stood within arm's reach of Roberto as if he had simply arrived late to dinner.

Roberto's first instinct was to grab him.

Brooks moved faster.

She stepped between them and caught Adrian's wrist before he could reach inside his jacket.

“Hands where I can see them.”

Adrian smiled faintly.

“I came voluntarily.”

“Then you won't mind being still.”

Two officers appeared from the side gallery.

They searched him.

His jacket contained no weapon.

It did contain three phones, a museum access card, and a small hardware security key registered to a Valez Holdings administrative account.

Marcus's voice came through Roberto's earpiece.

“That key should be in a safe at headquarters.”

Roberto stared at Adrian.

“How did you get it?”

Adrian ignored the question.

The museum's backup generators engaged.

Lights returned in sections.

Guests began murmuring as security staff guided them toward the main hall.

Brooks handcuffed Adrian.

His smile remained.

“You should be upstairs,” he told Roberto.

“Why?”

“Because in four minutes, your board votes on whether Northstar exercises the proxy.”

Evelyn stepped closer.

“You forged the activation.”

Adrian looked at her almost fondly.

“Forgery is such an inelegant word.”

“It is also a felony.”

“Only if you can prove the signature was not authorized.”

Roberto laughed once without humor.

“I am standing here telling you it wasn't.”

“And six directors are currently reviewing a document bearing your notarized signature, your digital certificate, and your corporate credential.”

Evelyn's face tightened.

“The notarization is fake.”

“Prove it before the vote.”

Brooks pulled Adrian toward the security corridor.

He resisted just enough to keep speaking.

“Roberto, you should understand something.”

“What?”

“Vanessa wanted your life.”

“Your house.”

“Your name.”

“Your money.”

“I only wanted back what Isabel tried to take from me.”

Roberto's expression hardened.

“You stole from sick children and scholarship funds.”

Adrian's smile disappeared.

“I built that foundation's legal structure.”

“You billed us for it.”

“I protected your family before you knew how to read a balance sheet.”

“You robbed us while doing it.”

Adrian's eyes flashed.

“Your father treated me like an employee.”

“You were an employee.”

That sentence struck harder than Roberto expected.

Adrian lunged one step forward before the officers restrained him.

For a moment the refined lawyer vanished, revealing decades of grievance beneath the tailored suit.

“I made your father untouchable.”

“And then you thought that made his money yours.”

Brooks pulled Adrian away.

He shouted over his shoulder.

“Ask yourself why Isabel trusted me with the estate after she suspected me.”

Roberto called back.

“She didn't.”

Adrian stopped.

Roberto continued.

“She wrote me a letter telling me to replace you.”

For the first time that night, Adrian looked truly defeated.

Roberto watched him disappear through the security door.

Then Evelyn grabbed his sleeve.

“Board vote.”

They ran upstairs.

Marcus had converted a small conference room into a digital command center.

Six board members appeared on a secure video call.

Three others were physically present at headquarters.

The disputed proxy resolution filled the central screen.

Malcolm Pierce was speaking.

“We have an obligation to preserve continuity.”

Evelyn interrupted as soon as Roberto entered.

“You have an obligation not to validate an instrument obtained through fraud.”

Pierce frowned.

“Ms. Shaw, this document passed our digital verification.”

“Your first-level verification.”

“The security certificate is valid.”

“It was used by an unauthorized person.”

“How do you know?”

Marcus held up the recovered hardware key.

“Because police just removed this from Adrian Cole's pocket.”

Silence spread across the call.

Pierce's expression changed.

“Where is Mr. Cole?”

“In custody.”

Another director leaned toward her camera.

“Then suspend the vote.”

Pierce hesitated.

Roberto understood why.

Malcolm had spent weeks arguing that uncertainty around Roberto endangered the company.

Admitting the proxy was compromised meant admitting he had nearly handed control to the man under criminal investigation.

“Malcolm,” Roberto said.

Pierce looked at him.

“This is not about me keeping my chair.”

“You already stepped aside.”

“I did.”

“Then what do you want?”

“I want you to stop pretending speed is the same thing as leadership.”

Pierce stiffened.

Roberto pointed to the forged resolution.

“You are four minutes away from voting on a document delivered during a security breach at a charity gala by a fugitive lawyer.”

“If that does not justify caution, resign.”

No one spoke.

Then one director raised his hand.

“Motion to suspend consideration pending forensic review.”

A second director spoke.

“Second.”

The vote was unanimous.

The Northstar proxy froze.

Roberto exhaled for what felt like the first time in an hour.

Marcus began tracing the upload.

The access key Adrian carried had been used from a museum network terminal three floors below.

Security video showed him entering the staff corridor before the blackout.

“He wanted you focused on him while the upload completed,” Marcus said.

“He wanted everyone focused on him,” Evelyn replied.

“Why?”

Because Adrian had not come merely to activate a proxy.

Police found another device taped beneath the terminal desk.

It contained scheduled releases of financial documents, private family emails, and heavily edited audio clips from Sofía's recordings.

At 9:00, if not stopped, the files would have been sent automatically to reporters and board members.

The edits made María sound threatening.

One clip removed Vanessa's words entirely and left only Sofía crying while María repeatedly said, “Come with me.”

Another cut together unrelated sentences to suggest Roberto had discussed sending Sofía away.

It was a manufactured reality built from real voices.

Marcus disabled the release with eleven minutes to spare.

Roberto stared at the list of recipients.

“He wanted to destroy every witness at once.”

Evelyn nodded.

“And preserve enough confusion to bargain with prosecutors.”

Brooks returned at 8:54.

“Adrian is asking for counsel.”

“He is counsel.”

“That joke was made downstairs too.”

“Did he say where he got Isabel's ring?”

“No.”

Roberto looked at the clock.

8:55.

Sofía had asked him to be home before nine.

For a second he stood torn between the man who had betrayed his family and the child waiting for him.

Then Isabel's letter came back to him.

Protect Sofía first.

Roberto took off his transmitter.

“I'm leaving.”

Evelyn blinked.

“Right now?”

“Yes.”

“Adrian is finally in custody.”

“He'll still be in custody tomorrow.”

“The board crisis isn't finished.”

“It can survive the night.”

He looked at Brooks.

“Call me if Sofía is at risk.”

“I will.”

“And if Adrian talks?”

Brooks almost smiled.

“I'll take excellent notes.”

Roberto left the gala at 8:57.

He arrived home at 9:16 because traffic did not care about promises.

Sofía was awake on the sofa with María.

A bowl of untouched popcorn sat between them.

Roberto entered carrying a small paper bag from the gala dessert table.

Sofía turned toward him.

“You're late.”

“I know.”

“Sixteen minutes.”

“I know.”

She tried to sound stern.

It almost worked.

Roberto sat beside her.

“I brought chocolate.”

“That helps.”

María smiled for the first time in days.

Roberto gave Sofía the dessert.

For ten minutes they talked about nothing important.

It felt more valuable than the board meeting.

Then Roberto's phone rang.

Detective Brooks.

He answered.

“Adrian talked?”

“Not exactly.”

“What happened?”

“We searched the three phones he carried.”

“And?”

“One received a message after he was arrested.”

“From Vanessa?”

“No.”

Brooks paused.

“From a scheduled account he created himself.”

“What did it say?”

“It gave us a storage-unit number.”

Roberto stood.

“What's inside?”

“We just opened it.”

He looked at Sofía.

Brooks continued.

“We found Isabel's ring.”

Roberto closed his eyes.

“And a box of personal effects from the hospital after her crash.”

His stomach tightened.

“There is a chain-of-custody form.”

“What does it show?”

“It shows Adrian signed for the box six years ago.”

Roberto went silent.

Brooks's voice softened slightly.

“He did not cause the crash.”

“But he stole from your wife after she died.”

Roberto looked at the chocolate mousse in Sofía's hands.

Some betrayals were loud.

Others wore a suit, signed a form, and waited six years to be discovered.

Then Brooks added one more thing.

May you like

“There is also a sealed audio cassette in the box.”

“It has Isabel's name on it.”
