Chapter 10 - Nathan's Hidden PlanThe words on my phone screen felt impossible to ignore.

"Nathan already has a plan."
I stared at the message.
My first thought was denial.
A part of me still wanted to believe there was something I didn’t understand.
That maybe Nathan was scared.
Maybe he was ashamed.
Maybe he was finally realizing what he had done.
But the longer I looked at the screen...
The more I understood.
People who are truly sorry do not create plans.
They admit.
They apologize.
They take responsibility.
Nathan was not trying to repair what happened.
He was trying to control what happened next.
I looked at Oliver.
He was lying quietly beneath the blanket.
His eyes were open.
Watching me.
“Mommy?”
I immediately put my phone down.
“Yes, baby?”
“Are you upset?”
My heart tightened.
Because even after everything...
Oliver was still worried about my feelings.
“No.”
I touched his cheek gently.
“I’m just thinking.”
“About Daddy?”
I paused.
Then nodded.
“Yes.”
Oliver looked away.
“He’s going to be mad.”
The certainty in his voice scared me.
Not because he said it.
Because he believed it.
“Why do you think that?”
He stayed silent.
Then whispered:
“Because he said people who make trouble have consequences.”
I felt a chill move through me.
Consequences.
Another word Nathan used to make fear sound like discipline.
I wanted to ask more.
I wanted to know everything.
But I stopped myself.
Oliver had spent too long being questioned by people who wanted information, not understanding.
So I simply held his hand.
“You don’t have to worry anymore.”
He looked at me.
“I don’t?”
“No.”
I smiled through my tears.
“Mommy is here.”
For the first time all night...
He relaxed.
Just a little.
The next morning, the hospital room was filled with gray winter sunlight.
Oliver was awake.
His color had returned slightly.
The doctors were pleased with his progress.
But I knew the physical recovery was only one part of what needed healing.
The emotional damage was harder to see.
And sometimes...
The hardest wounds are the ones nobody notices.
A nurse entered with a folder.
“Your son can probably go home later today if his temperature stays stable.”
I nodded.
“Thank you.”
She hesitated.
Then looked at me carefully.
“Are you okay?”
The question surprised me.
I looked at her.
“No.”
She nodded.
“Sometimes admitting that is the first step.”
After she left, my phone rang.
Daniel.
I answered immediately.
“Tell me what you found.”
His voice was serious.
“I checked the information I could access.”
“And?”
“There’s something you need to know about Nathan.”
My stomach tightened.
“What?”
“He contacted someone this morning.”
“Who?”
“A family attorney.”
I froze.
“An attorney?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Because he isn’t preparing an apology.”
I looked toward Oliver.
He was drawing quietly on a piece of paper.
“What is he preparing?”
Daniel lowered his voice.
“A custody argument.”
The room seemed to stop.
“What?”
“He’s trying to make it look like you’re unstable.”
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Me?”
“Yes.”
“He’s claiming you overreacted.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“My son was in the hospital.”
“I know.”
“And he’s saying I’m unstable?”
Daniel sighed.
“He’s building a story.”
I looked at Oliver.
A story.
Again.
Another story.
Another version where someone else was the problem.
“What else?”
Daniel paused.
“There’s more.”
“Tell me.”
“He told the attorney that Oliver has always been difficult.”
My eyes closed.
There it was again.
The same word.
Difficult.
“They’re using his behavior against him.”
I felt anger rising.
“He’s six.”
“I know.”
“He’s a child.”
“I know.”
Daniel became quiet.
Then said:
“There is something else.”
“What?”
“He said you encouraged Oliver to lie.”
I felt like I had been punched.
“What?”
“He’s claiming you’re influencing him against his father.”
I looked at my son.
The little boy who was afraid to even speak.
The little boy who apologized for being cold.
And Nathan was telling people I was manipulating him?
I whispered:
“He’s protecting himself.”
“Yes.”
Daniel answered.
“And he’s moving fast.”
“How fast?”
“Very.”
I looked at the clock.
“What does that mean?”
“It means he may try to take Oliver before anyone understands what happened.”
My blood ran cold.
“No.”
Daniel was quiet.
“I thought you should know.”
I ended the call slowly.
For several seconds, I just stood there.
Then Oliver looked up.
“Mommy?”
I forced myself to smile.
“Yes?”
“Can we go home?”
I walked toward him.
“Yes, baby.”
But inside...
I knew home wasn’t the same anymore.
Because the person who should have protected our home had become the person I needed to protect Oliver from.
Later that afternoon, I signed the discharge papers.
Oliver was dressed carefully in warm clothes.
The hospital staff reminded me to keep him comfortable and monitor him closely.
I thanked them.
Then we walked toward the exit.
But before we reached the doors...
I saw him.
Nathan.
Standing in the hospital lobby.
Waiting.
My body immediately became tense.
Oliver stopped walking.
His hand tightened around mine.
That tiny reaction told me everything.
Nathan noticed.
His face changed.
Not sadness.
Not guilt.
Surprise.
Because he finally saw something.
Oliver was afraid of him.
“Oliver.”
Nathan’s voice softened.
“Come here, buddy.”
My son didn’t move.
He stepped closer to me instead.
Nathan looked at me.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Anger.
Hidden beneath a calm expression.
“You’re keeping my son away from me?”
I stared at him.
“No.”
“Then why won’t he come to me?”
I looked down at Oliver.
Then back at Nathan.
“Maybe you should ask yourself that.”
His jaw tightened.
“I made a mistake.”
I waited.
But he didn’t say the words.
I’m sorry.
He never said them.
Instead, he said:
“You’re destroying this family.”
I felt something inside me go quiet.
Because I finally understood.
Nathan wasn’t sorry he hurt Oliver.
He was sorry he was being exposed.
I stepped closer.
“This family was already broken.”
His eyes narrowed.
“Careful.”
I looked directly at him.
“No.”
I held Oliver’s hand tighter.
“I’m done being careful.”
A security guard nearby glanced over.
Nathan lowered his voice.
“You don’t know what you’re doing.”
I looked at him.
“Neither did you.”
Then I walked away.
With Oliver beside me.
But as we reached the parking lot...
My phone vibrated.
A new message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
My heart stopped.
"You need to check Nathan’s computer."
A second message appeared.
"The restaurant was not the first time he planned something against you."
I looked at Oliver.
Then at the hospital behind us.
May you like
And I realized...
The truth was much bigger than I thought.
