Chapter 7 - The Bride Who Knew Too Much.

Brielle Cartwright asked to meet without her father.

That detail mattered.

Everything about the Cartwright family usually involved Harold Cartwright.

He chose restaurants.

He chose lawyers.

He chose charitable boards.

According to half of Manhattan, he had selected Brielle's first apartment before she knew which neighborhood she liked.

Ethan chose a private conference room at Owen's office instead of his home.

Mara insisted on attending.

"If her family used a driver to interfere with a DNA test involving my children, I am not waiting in another room."

Ethan did not argue.

Brielle arrived wearing jeans, a camel coat, and no makeup.

Without the gold gown and diamonds, she looked younger.

More frightened too.

She set a small black drive on the table.

"My father doesn't know I have this."

Owen did not touch it.

"What is it?"

"I don't know everything."

Mara leaned back.

"That sentence is becoming popular."

Brielle looked at her.

"You have every reason to hate me."

"I don't know you well enough."

"You know enough."

"Then start talking."

Brielle looked at Ethan.

"Our engagement was not my idea."

Ethan almost laughed.

"That makes two of us."

"I thought maybe it could become real."

"Brielle."

"I'm not asking you to feel sorry for me."

Her voice tightened.

"I'm trying to explain why I ignored things I should not have ignored."

Owen folded his hands.

"What things?"

Brielle took a breath.

"The first time I heard Mara's name was four years ago."

Mara's eyes narrowed.

"Two years after the boys were born."

"Yes."

"From whom?"

"My father and Eleanor."

Ethan leaned forward.

"What did they say?"

"I wasn't supposed to hear it."

"Brielle."

"They were in my father's library."

"I walked in from the terrace and heard Eleanor say, 'The Vale issue cannot reappear before the succession plan is complete.'"

Mara went still.

"Vale issue."

"I asked who Vale was."

"My father said an old legal matter."

"Then he told me to forget it."

Ethan's voice was flat.

"And you did."

Brielle looked ashamed.

"Yes."

Mara laughed softly.

"Must be nice."

"Mara."

"No."

Mara's eyes flashed.

"Do you know what I was doing four years ago while she was forgetting my name?"

"I was working nights at a warehouse because one daycare charged less if I picked the boys up after midnight."

Brielle swallowed.

"I know I can't fix that."

"Then don't ask me to make you comfortable about it."

"I'm not."

Ethan let the silence sit.

Brielle deserved some of it.

Then she continued.

"Last year, when our parents started discussing the engagement, I heard the name again."

"What happened?"

"My father told Eleanor that the old monitoring agreement needed to remain active until after the wedding."

Mara's face drained of color.

"Monitoring agreement."

Ethan felt rage rise.

"You knew they were watching her."

"I suspected they were watching someone."

"You had her name."

"I didn't know she had children."

"Would that have changed it?"

Brielle looked at him.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because I'm not my father."

Mara's voice was hard.

"You still protected him."

Brielle nodded.

"Yes."

That admission changed the room.

No excuses.

No polished denial.

"Why come now?"

Owen asked.

Brielle stared at the drive.

"Because yesterday my father told me the negative DNA result meant the engagement could continue."

Ethan's blood went cold.

"He knew before I told you."

"I never told him."

"Then how did he know?"

Brielle's eyes filled with anger.

"That's when I realized he was involved in the test."

Mara stood.

"Your family tried to make my sons strangers to their own father twice."

"I know."

"No."

Mara's voice shook now.

"You understand the sentence."

"You do not know what it costs."

Brielle looked down.

"You're right."

Ethan reached for the drive.

"Where did this come from?"

"My father's home office."

"You stole it."

"Copied it."

"What's on it?"

"Files labeled Harbor."

Ethan stared at her.

"You opened them?"

"Most are encrypted."

"Why not give this to the police?"

"Because I don't know whether it proves a crime or a family arranging surveillance through private investigators."

Owen nodded reluctantly.

"Reasonable concern."

"And because if my father discovers I took it, he will move everything else."

Mara crossed her arms.

"Why should we trust you?"

Brielle met her eyes.

"You shouldn't."

She slid the drive forward.

"Trust the files instead."

Owen took custody of the drive and documented the transfer.

A forensic technician cloned it without opening the original.

For three hours, they waited.

Ethan used the time to call Jonas and increase security around the boys.

Mara used it to pace.

Brielle remained seated at the end of the table.

Finally, the technician returned.

"We cracked one archive."

Owen stood.

"Show us."

A folder opened on the screen.

It contained invoices from private investigation firms spanning six years.

Mara's old addresses appeared in chronological order.

Photographs showed her entering grocery stores, hospitals, schools, and apartment buildings.

Four tiny infants became toddlers.

Toddlers became boys.

Ethan's chest tightened with every image.

Somebody had watched his sons grow while making sure he did not.

Mara covered her mouth.

"They knew everything."

Brielle looked horrified.

"I didn't know it was this."

"Keep going," Ethan said.

The technician opened a spreadsheet.

Payment authorizations appeared beside initials.

EW FOUNDATION OPERATIONS.

HCC STRATEGIC SERVICES.

NS LEGAL.

Owen pointed.

"NS is probably Nathan Sloane."

Ethan looked at Brielle.

"HCC."

Her face went pale.

"Harold Charles Cartwright."

Mara pointed to another column.

"What's Continuation Status?"

The spreadsheet showed monthly entries.

ACTIVE.

ACTIVE.

ACTIVE.

Then, three weeks before Ethan's planned engagement announcement, the status changed.

ESCALATE.

Ethan felt the room become colder.

Owen opened the associated memo.

Most of it was encrypted.

Only the subject line was visible.

VALE CONTINGENCY - PRE-MARRIAGE RESOLUTION.

Brielle whispered.

"Oh my God."

Mara looked at Ethan.

"They knew we might be found."

"Or they were afraid you would come forward."

"I wasn't planning to."

"Maybe they didn't know that."

The technician opened another folder.

Inside was a recent photograph.

Ethan recognized the restaurant immediately.

It had been taken three days before he walked into the bathroom.

Mara stood outside the service entrance with all four boys.

A note beneath the image read:

SUBJECT HAS ACCEPTED TEMPORARY EMPLOYMENT AT WHITAKER-AFFILIATED PROPERTY.

PROXIMITY RISK INCREASED.

Brielle stared at it.

"They knew she was there."

Ethan's voice turned quiet.

"Before I did."

Owen scrolled lower.

There was one final instruction.

DO NOT ALLOW DIRECT CONTACT WITH E.W. PRIOR TO ANNOUNCEMENT.

Authorized by H.C.C.

Mara looked at Brielle.

Brielle shook her head as if she could separate herself from the initials.

"I didn't know."

Ethan believed her.

Mara did not.

Then the technician opened the last unencrypted file.

It was a calendar invitation for the night Ethan had canceled the engagement.

Location: Whitaker Conservatory.

Attendees: Eleanor Whitaker, Harold Cartwright, Nathan Sloane.

The meeting time was midnight.

May you like

The subject line contained only three words.

CLOSE PROJECT HARBOR.
