Chapter 3 - The Sapphire in Her Name.

The police arrived before the wedding cake began to lean.
Two uniformed officers entered first.
A detective followed them.
He was in his early forties, wearing a dark suit with no tie and carrying a small notebook he never opened.
"Detective Marcus Reed."
His voice was steady and almost deliberately unimpressed by the wealth surrounding him.
Thomas introduced himself.
Reed nodded.
"I know who you are."
That was the first time all evening Claire saw her father look mildly uncomfortable.
The detective looked at the guests.
"Who found the missing item?"
Ethan's security guard raised a hand.
"Daniel Cross."
"Private security?"
"Yes."
"For whom?"
"Mr. Cole."
Reed looked toward Ethan.
"Not the hotel?"
"No."
"Interesting."
Ethan's jaw tightened.
Claire noticed.
The detective asked everyone to remain where they were while hotel security isolated camera footage.
Then he approached Claire.
Nora's shawl covered most of the torn back of her dress, but the rip remained visible.
Reed looked at it once.
He did not comment.
"Ms. Bennett?"
"Yes."
"Were you searched?"
"Not by law enforcement."
"That wasn't my question."
Claire glanced toward Vivian.
"My stepmother tore my dress and searched through the fabric."
Reed's expression changed by less than a millimeter.
"Did you consent?"
"No."
"Were you physically prevented from leaving?"
Claire looked at Ethan.
"Yes."
Reed turned toward him.
Ethan folded his arms.
"She was a suspect in a theft."
"You're not a police officer."
"I was protecting valuable property."
"Property can be insured."
Reed looked back at Claire.
"People generally shouldn't be treated like property."
For the first time that night, Claire almost relaxed.
Madison stepped forward.
"Can we focus on the fact that she had my sapphire?"
Reed turned.
"You're the bride?"
"Yes."
"Congratulations."
His tone suggested he was congratulating her on a parking permit.
Madison blinked.
Reed continued.
"The item was recovered from a purse believed to belong to Ms. Bennett."
"It does belong to her."
Claire interrupted.
"No."
Madison ignored her.
"It has her initials."
Reed looked at the bag resting untouched on the security table.
"Initials are not fingerprints."
Vivian sighed.
"Detective, surely we can avoid turning this into a philosophical exercise."
Reed looked at her.
"Who are you?"
"Vivian Bennett."
"Relationship to the bride?"
"Mother."
"To Ms. Bennett?"
"Stepmother."
Reed wrote something in his notebook for the first time.
Vivian noticed.
"What did you write?"
"Your name."
Claire almost laughed.
Vivian did not.
The detective had the purse and sapphire photographed.
He asked Claire when she last saw her actual bag.
"In the bridal suite before the ceremony."
"Who had access?"
"Bridesmaids, stylists, family, staff."
"Did you leave it unattended?"
"Yes."
"Was it monogrammed?"
Claire nodded.
"C.B. in silver."
Madison crossed her arms as if the answer proved everything.
Reed asked, "Distinctive marks?"
"A scratch near the clasp."
The detective examined the planted bag.
"No scratch."
Madison spoke immediately.
"She could have had it repaired."
Claire looked at her.
"I didn't."
Reed ignored both of them.
"Where is the bag you say is yours?"
Claire looked toward the elevator.
"In the bridal suite, unless someone moved it."
"I'll need to see it."
Madison's mouth tightened.
Only for a second.
Claire noticed.
Reed noticed Claire noticing.
That small exchange mattered.
Two hotel officers accompanied them upstairs.
Thomas started to follow.
Reed stopped him.
"I'd prefer Ms. Bennett and hotel security only."
Thomas looked at Claire.
"I'll be downstairs."
She held his gaze.
"I'm sure you will."
He flinched.
Good, Claire thought.
Let him.
The elevator ride was silent.
Reed stood beside her.
Nora stood on the other side.
Halfway up, the detective said, "How far along?"
"Twenty-nine weeks."
"Any complications?"
"No."
"Good."
Claire glanced at him.
"Are you asking as a detective?"
"My wife is an obstetric nurse."
"That explains the disapproval."
"It explains why I'm wondering what kind of person tears open a pregnant woman's dress over a rock."
Nora made a sound that might have been a laugh.
Claire stared at the floor numbers.
"It's never about the rock."
Reed looked at her.
"No."
His voice softened.
"It usually isn't."
The bridal floor had been almost completely cleared after the ceremony.
The hallway smelled of roses, hairspray, and expensive perfume.
Claire led them to the main dressing suite.
The door was locked.
A hotel employee opened it with a master key.
The room looked exactly as Claire remembered.
Champagne glasses.
Makeup brushes.
White garment bags.
A broken bobby pin on the carpet.
Her overnight bag sat near the sofa.
The small table where she had left her clutch was empty.
Claire stopped.
"It was there."
Reed photographed the table.
"Who knew?"
"Nora saw it."
Nora nodded.
"I did."
"Anyone else?"
Claire thought back.
Madison's maid of honor, Lila, had come in looking for a phone charger.
Vivian had entered to collect a jewelry pouch.
Ethan had appeared briefly at the doorway despite being told not to see the bride before the ceremony.
A stylist named Sophie had been packing supplies.
And Thomas had stopped in for less than a minute to tell Claire to keep the hidden phone on her.
"Several people."
Reed asked for names.
Claire gave them.
He wrote everything down.
Then one hotel officer opened a closet.
"Detective."
A pale blue clutch sat on the bottom shelf.
Claire's heart stopped.
She crossed the room.
"That's mine."
Reed stopped her before she touched it.
"Let me."
He put on gloves.
The clutch had her initials.
C.B.
And near the clasp was the thin scratch Claire remembered.
Nora exhaled.
Reed photographed it.
Then he opened the bag.
Inside were Claire's lipstick, room key, wallet, and a folded pharmacy receipt.
There was no sapphire.
Reed looked at her.
"You have two monogrammed bags that look nearly identical."
"I have one."
"Someone has gone to considerable trouble."
"Yes."
He lifted Claire's room key.
"Where are you staying?"
"Suite 1708."
"Alone?"
Claire hesitated.
"My friend Leah is staying with me, but she left before the ceremony."
"Why?"
"Work emergency."
Reed returned everything to the clutch.
"I want hotel logs for the room."
The officer nodded.
A sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Fast.
Then the door opened.
Madison entered.
Ethan was behind her.
Reed's expression hardened.
"I specifically asked you to remain downstairs."
Madison ignored him.
She stared at Claire's real clutch.
For half a second, genuine alarm crossed her face.
Then she covered it.
"You found another one?"
Claire stepped closer.
"My one."
Madison looked toward Ethan.
His face remained still.
Too still.
Claire saw it.
A silent exchange.
Reed saw that too.
"Mr. Cole."
Ethan looked at him.
"Where did your security officer find the other bag?"
"Under a cocktail table near the east wall."
"Which table?"
"I don't know."
"You hired him."
"I don't supervise every movement he makes."
Reed wrote again.
Madison snapped.
"She still could have planted both."
Claire stared at her.
"What exactly is wrong with you?"
Madison's face flushed.
"You ruined every good thing I ever had."
Claire almost laughed.
"I barely speak to you."
"You don't have to."
Madison stepped closer.
"You walk into a room and Dad looks at you like you matter more."
The words surprised everyone.
Especially Madison.
She immediately looked toward Ethan.
He did not comfort her.
He looked irritated.
That was another small thing Claire stored away.
Reed closed his notebook.
"We're done in here for now."
Madison pointed at Claire.
"Are you arresting her?"
"No."
"Why not?"
"Because I have two nearly identical bags, a questionable private search, a recovered item with no documented chain of custody, and a room full of people apparently trying to solve my case for me."
Ethan spoke.
"You're making a mistake."
Reed looked at him.
"I make those professionally."
Claire almost smiled again.
Then the hotel officer's radio crackled.
A voice asked him to return to the security office.
The officer listened.
His expression changed.
"What?"
Reed asked.
The officer looked at Claire.
"One of the hallway cameras outside this suite was disabled for eleven minutes."
Madison went still.
Ethan did not.
Reed's eyes narrowed.
"When?"
The officer swallowed.
"Beginning six minutes before the ceremony."
Claire's skin prickled.
That was almost exactly when she had left her clutch unattended.
Reed turned to Ethan.
"You run a security company, correct?"
Ethan's face hardened.
"Yes."
"Then I'm guessing you understand why I'm suddenly very interested in eleven missing minutes."
Madison grabbed Ethan's arm.
He pulled away from her without looking.
Claire saw it.
So did Madison.
For the first time that night, the bride looked genuinely afraid.
The hotel officer's radio crackled again.
This time, he lifted it slowly.
"They found something else."
Reed frowned.
"Where?"
The officer looked directly at Claire.
"Suite 1708."
Claire's breath caught.
"What did they find?"
The officer hesitated.
"A second jewelry box."
Claire felt the baby move beneath her hand.
Reed's expression became unreadable.
Madison smiled again.
May you like
But Ethan did not.
And that was when Claire realized the trap inside the ballroom had only been the beginning.
