Chapter 6 - The Ghost in the Machine

The highway stretched out endlessly like a dark ribbon cutting through the pine forests.
Claire kept the speedometer exactly at the legal limit.
She could not afford to get pulled over right now.
Every police cruiser she passed sent a violent jolt of adrenaline straight into her heart.
The clock on the dashboard read 9:15 AM.
She had less than three hours until her ultimatum expired.

She knew Evelyn Harrow would never wire the money.
Evelyn did not negotiate with people she considered peasants.
The billionaire matriarch would use this time to hunt them down.
Claire glanced at the rearview mirror for the hundredth time.
The lanes behind her were mostly empty, save for a long-haul truck.
She needed to ditch the car.
Harris had removed the GPS tracker, but the vehicle itself was registered to her name.
Any highway patrol scanner could flag her license plate in a microsecond.
"Mom, I have to go to the bathroom," Lily murmured from the backseat.
Her voice was thick with sleep and lingering fear.
"Hold on just a little longer, baby," Claire said softly.
"My tummy hurts."
"I know, sweetie."
Claire took the next exit, tires squealing slightly on the wet asphalt.
The sign read 'Welcome to Blackwood Creek'.
It was a decaying logging town that time and money had completely forgotten.
She pulled into the gravel lot of a dilapidated diner and gas station.
"Stay in the car and keep the doors locked," Claire instructed.
"Don't leave me alone," Lily pleaded, her blue eyes wide with panic.
"I am just going to pay for the gas, Lily."
"Please, Mommy."
Claire unbuckled her seatbelt and climbed into the back.
She wrapped her arms around her trembling daughter.
"I will never leave you," Claire whispered fiercely into Lily's blonde hair.
"I promise you that."
She climbed back out and pumped twenty dollars’ worth of gas.
She walked inside the dusty convenience store.
The cashier was a teenager who didn't even look up from his phone.
Claire grabbed two bottles of water, a pack of crackers, and a cheap prepaid smartphone.
She paid with a twenty-dollar bill from Harris’s envelope.
The cash felt dirty in her hands, but it was their only lifeline.
She rushed back to the car and locked the doors.
She ripped the packaging off the prepaid phone.
She activated it using the store's public Wi-Fi signal.
Her fingers flew across the cheap plastic screen.
She typed in a web address she had memorized three years ago.
It was a secure, encrypted email server Thomas had set up before he died.
She created a fresh, anonymous email account.
She had to prepare the drop.
If Evelyn's people found her, she needed a dead man's switch.
She needed to know that the files on that flash drive would reach the press instantly.
She plugged the flash drive into the small adapter she always kept on her keychain.
The phone read the external storage.
A single folder popped up on the screen, labeled 'Project Icarus'.
Claire’s breath hitched in her throat.
She tapped the folder.
Hundreds of PDF documents and audio files populated the screen.
She opened the first audio file.
It was Thomas's voice.
"If you are listening to this, my mother has finally silenced me," the recording began.
Tears instantly blurred Claire’s vision.
It was the first time she had heard her husband's voice in three years.
He sounded so tired, so utterly broken.
"The structural integrity reports for the downtown development were falsified," Thomas's voice continued.
"Mother paid off the city inspectors."
"The concrete is substandard."
"If a minor earthquake hits, the entire residential block will collapse."
Claire stared at the screen in pure horror.
Evelyn hadn't just covered up a past mistake.

She was currently building a death trap for thousands of innocent people.
And Thomas had died trying to stop it.
