The moment every exit was locked, panic swept through the ballroom.
Hundreds of guests looked around in confusion, their elegant conversations replaced by frightened whispers.
The man who had just struck her forced a confident smile.
"Open these doors!"
Not a single security guard obeyed him.
Instead, more than fifty tactical security officers entered the ballroom in perfect formation.
They lined up in two silent rows.
None of them looked at the man.
Every one of them bowed respectfully toward her.
"Good evening, Ms. Carter."

"I own this building."
Then she paused.
"No."
"I own the land beneath it."
"The charity hosting tonight's gala."
"The management company."
"And the corporation where you're serving as CEO..."
