Chapter 4 — Justice Doesn't Need Revenge

Chapter 4 — Justice Doesn't Need Revenge

Damien dropped to his knees.

"I'm sorry."

"It was a mistake."

"I lost my temper."

He reached for my hand.

I stepped away.

"Don't."

Tears streamed down his face.

"I'll pay anything."

"I'll apologize publicly."

"I'll disappear."

Richard looked toward me.

"My decision doesn't matter."

"It's your life."

"What do you want?"

The ballroom waited.

Every eye remained fixed on me.

I looked at Damien.

Then at the bruise reflected in the crystal window.

Finally...

I spoke.

"I don't want revenge."

"I want accountability."

The district attorney entered with detectives.

Behind them came officers carrying warrants.

Assault.

False imprisonment.

Witness intimidation.

Financial fraud.

Tax evasion.

Evidence gathered over years.

Damien stared in horror.

"You planned this?"

I shook my head.

"No."

"You planned it yourself."

"You simply never expected someone to survive long enough to expose you."

The handcuffs clicked around his wrists.

For the first time in his life...

No one came to save him.
