Chapter 3: The House That Hid the Truth

Chapter 3: The House That Hid the Truth

Within an hour, detectives arrived at the hospital.

Daniel personally demanded a criminal investigation.

Marissa insisted she was being framed.

"I loved Noah!" she cried through perfectly timed tears. "Why would I ever hurt him?"

But Evelyn wasn't listening anymore.

She kept replaying something in her mind.

The tape.

The insects.

The basement.

"Mr. Vale," she said, "I need to see your security footage."

Daniel frowned.

"The cameras cover every hallway."

"Not the basement?"

He hesitated.

"No."

Marissa answered too quickly.

"They stopped working months ago."

Evelyn looked directly into her eyes.

"That's interesting."

Detectives accompanied Daniel and Evelyn back to the mansion.

Marissa had no choice but to follow.

The house looked beautiful from outside.

Inside...

It felt different.

Too quiet.

Too rehearsed.

Evelyn walked straight toward the basement door.

Marissa blocked the entrance.

"There's nothing down there."

Evelyn smiled faintly.

"Then you won't mind if we look."

Daniel unlocked the door himself.

The smell hit them first.

A strange mixture of chemicals and damp soil.

In the far corner sat an old wooden cabinet secured with a brass padlock.

Marissa's breathing became uneven.

"Those are cleaning supplies."

A detective broke the lock.

The cabinet swung open.

Rows of clear plastic containers filled the shelves.

Each one crawled with insects.

Centipedes.

Beetles.

Venomous spiders.

Some containers carried handwritten labels.

Humidity. Feeding Schedule. Release Time.

Daniel's knees nearly gave out.

One detective whispered,

"My God..."

Another officer opened a nearby drawer.

Inside lay children's medical supplies.

Unused casts.

Padding.

Medical tape identical to the one found around Noah's arm.

And a leather notebook.

Its pages were filled with dates.

Behavior logs.

Punishment plans.

Each page listed Noah's "offenses."

Cried after bedtime.

Mentioned his mother.

Refused vegetables.

Next to every offense was a punishment.

Isolation.

Food restrictions.

Insects.

Daniel couldn't breathe.

Every page ended with the same sentence.

Pain creates obedience.

Then Evelyn noticed one final photograph tucked inside the notebook.

It showed Marissa standing beside a man wearing surgical scrubs.

Daniel recognized him instantly.

Dr. Ethan Cross.

The orthopedic technician who had applied Noah's cast.

The detectives immediately issued a warrant for his arrest.

Marissa finally understood.

The lies were collapsing.
