CHAPTER 2: The Bride's Greatest Lie

CHAPTER 2: The Bride's Greatest Lie

For three endless seconds, no one moved.

The string quartet stopped playing.

Champagne glasses hung frozen halfway to waiting lips.

Then the first pair of handcuffs clicked shut around Richard Ashford's wrists.

"No!" he roared, lunging toward Julian. "You set me up!"

The lead federal agent calmly stepped between them.

"Richard Ashford, you're under arrest for conspiracy to commit securities fraud, money laundering, tax evasion, and obstruction of justice."

Guests erupted into chaos.

Some rushed toward the exits.

Others lifted their phones, recording every second.

The bride, Amelia, stared at the agents as though she had forgotten how to breathe.

"What... what is this?" she whispered.

Julian finally looked at her.

Not with anger.

Not with hatred.

With disappointment.

"The truth."

Richard struggled against the agents.

"You ungrateful little bastard! Everything I built was for this family!"

Julian laughed softly.

"No. Everything you stole was for yourself."

His mother watched in stunned silence.

For years she had suspected Richard hid money.

She had never imagined her own son had spent months helping federal investigators dismantle his empire.

One agent approached Julian.

"Mr. Ashford, we've secured the servers."

Julian nodded.

"And Switzerland?"

"Frozen."

"Cayman Islands?"

"Frozen."

"Singapore?"

"Frozen this morning."

Richard's face finally cracked.

"No..."

Julian smiled.

"You always said the safest prison is one people don't know they're living in."

He stepped closer until only inches separated father and son.

"I simply opened the door."

Richard lowered his voice.

"You think you've won?"

Julian answered just as quietly.

"I haven't started."

The words sent a chill through everyone close enough to hear.

Meanwhile Amelia grabbed Julian's arm.

"You think I betrayed you?"

Julian slowly removed her hand.

"I know you did."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"It wasn't what you think."

"I watched the video."

"You watched exactly what someone wanted you to watch."

For the first time...

Julian hesitated.

Outside the ballroom—

Another black SUV pulled into the circular driveway.

A woman stepped out wearing a cream-colored pantsuit.

The moment Julian saw her...

The color disappeared from his face.

"Claire?"

His mother whispered in disbelief.

"I thought she died six years ago..."

The woman looked directly at Julian.

Then she spoke words that shattered everything again.

May you like

"No, Julian."

"I've been waiting for today."
