Chapter 9 – The Collapse

The first explosion thundered through the tunnel.
The floor lurched beneath their feet.
Dust poured from the ceiling in thick gray clouds.
"Everybody out!" Detective Collins shouted.
Another deafening boom echoed underground.
The lights flickered once—
Then went dark.
Only the officers' flashlights pierced the choking dust.
Daniel scooped Emma into his arms while Leo grabbed his father's shirt.
"Stay close!" Daniel yelled.
Concrete cracked overhead.
A massive slab crashed onto the floor behind them, sealing off one of the empty rooms.
The tunnel shook again.
"They're bringing it down!" a deputy shouted.
Collins keyed her radio.
"Emergency response! Tunnel collapse in progress! We have survivors underground!"
Only static answered.
The rock above them blocked the signal.
She cursed under her breath.
"No reception."
A deputy pointed farther down the passage.
"There!"
At the end of the corridor, a steel security door was slowly sliding shut.
Someone had activated it remotely.
"If that closes, we'll be trapped!" another officer yelled.
Collins didn't hesitate.
"Move!"
The group sprinted.
The gap beneath the descending door narrowed with every second.
Five feet.
Four.
Three.
Daniel pushed Leo ahead.
"Go!"
Leo dropped to the floor and slid underneath.
Emma followed.
A deputy barely squeezed through.
Daniel dove at the last second, scraping his shoulders against the steel as it slammed shut behind him with a deafening clang.
The tunnel on the other side erupted in another collapse.
Chunks of concrete hammered against the closed door.
For a long moment...
Silence.
Everyone caught their breath.
One deputy leaned against the wall.
"That door just saved our lives."
Daniel looked around.
"This isn't the way we came."
The passage ahead was cleaner.
Brighter.
Fresh LED lights illuminated smooth concrete walls.
Security cameras hung from the ceiling.
Someone had built this section recently.
Very recently.
Collins stared upward.
"They had electricity."
"And surveillance," another deputy added.
"This wasn't some abandoned bunker."
Emma tugged gently on Daniel's sleeve.
"They watched us."
Daniel knelt.
"From where?"
She pointed toward one of the cameras.
"There... but not only there."
"What do you mean?"
"There were rooms behind the walls."
Collins immediately ordered two deputies to inspect the concrete.
One of them knocked against the wall.
Solid.
The next section sounded different.
Hollow.
He looked at Collins.
"This isn't structural."
Using a rescue hammer, the deputies broke through the drywall hidden beneath a layer of concrete panels.
A narrow observation room appeared.
Inside were computer monitors.
Recording equipment.
Shelves filled with hard drives.
Every screen had gone black.
But one monitor still displayed a frozen image.
Patricia's living room.
The timestamp read...
Ten months ago.
Daniel stepped closer.
His blood ran cold.
The footage showed Leo playing with his green dinosaur.
Then...
The bookshelf in Patricia's hallway quietly swung open.
A hidden door.
A man stepped out.
His face wasn't visible.
He crouched beside Leo.
Held out his hand.
Leo smiled.
And willingly followed him into the secret passage.
The hidden door closed.
Seconds later...
Patricia walked into the hallway.
She looked directly at the closed bookshelf.
She stood there for nearly thirty seconds.
Then she turned around...
...and walked away.
Daniel felt the room spin.
"She knew."
No one spoke.
Detective Collins quietly removed the hard drive from the recorder.
"This changes everything."
Emma shook her head.
"No."
Everyone looked at her.
"It gets worse."
Collins crouched beside the little girl.
"What do you mean?"
Emma pointed toward a blinking red light above the monitors.
"The cameras..."
"They don't just record."
"They tell him where people are."
Before anyone could respond, the red light turned solid.
A calm electronic voice echoed through hidden speakers in the tunnel.
"Intrusion confirmed."
A pause.

Then another sentence.
"Lockdown protocol initiated."
