Chapter 8 - The Hotel of Mirrors.

Walter Harker had aged badly since Diane’s funeral.

His face looked softer around the jaw and harder around the eyes.

Claire had once associated his gray hair with wisdom.

Now it looked like camouflage.

Mateo raised his phone.

Harker glanced at it and smiled.

“You can record me if it makes you feel brave.”

Claire stepped between them.

“What did you mean about my mother?”

Harker’s smile faded.

“She kept looking after she already knew enough to be afraid.”

Claire felt something violent rise inside her.

She kept her voice level.

“Did you kill her?”

“No.”

The answer came too quickly.

“Did Julian?”

Harker looked toward the suite door.

“He does not like that word.”

Claire’s fingernails bit into her palms.

“What word?”

“Kill.”

Harker gave a tired sigh.

“He prefers consequence.”

Mateo’s phone continued recording.

Claire heard movement inside Suite 4108.

Julian and Caleb were still arguing.

Harker stepped closer.

“You should leave.”

“You first.”

“Claire, I watched you grow up.”

“Then you watched him steal my life.”

Something flickered in Harker’s expression.

Shame, perhaps.

Or merely irritation at being accurately described.

“Your grandfather built a fortune through compromises you never had to see.”

“Do not turn theft into philosophy.”

Harker’s jaw tightened.

“You sound like Diane.”

“Good.”

“She died sounding righteous too.”

Claire moved before she thought.

Her hand struck Harker across the face.

The sound snapped through the corridor.

Mateo inhaled sharply.

Harker did not retaliate.

He slowly touched his cheek.

Then the suite door opened.

Julian appeared.

His eyes landed on Claire.

There was no surprise this time.

Only fury.

Behind him stood a broad-shouldered man in his forties with a scar along one temple.

Caleb Stone.

Claire recognized him from Diane’s investigator photograph.

Caleb stared at her as if seeing history repeat itself.

Julian looked at Harker.

“What is she doing here?”

Harker’s cheek was turning red.

“Apparently your security is as competent as your marriage planning.”

Julian’s gaze shifted to Mateo’s phone.

“Give me that.”

Mateo took one step back.

“No.”

Julian almost smiled.

“You think because there are cameras in a hotel, you are safe?”

Claire stepped forward.

“The cameras are why you’re scared.”

Julian looked at her.

For one second, husband and wife stood close enough to touch.

Claire could smell the cedar cologne he had worn on their anniversary.

Memory tried to betray her.

She pushed it down.

“Why did you stage Caleb’s death?”

Caleb’s face changed.

Julian did not look at him.

“Claire, go home.”

“You stole my home.”

“Then go wherever you have been sleeping.”

“That sounded almost like the man I married.”

His eyes hardened.

“The man you married spent seven years cleaning up after your family’s financial incompetence.”

Claire laughed softly.

“There you are.”

Julian’s control slipped.

“You have no idea what I carried.”

“My mother did.”

That landed.

Harker looked away.

Caleb stared at Julian.

Claire continued.

“She knew about Ember Ridge.”

Julian’s face went blank.

“She knew Caleb was alive.”

Caleb swore under his breath.

“She knew about the brake line.”

Harker closed his eyes.

Julian’s gaze sharpened.

“What did she leave you?”

Claire smiled for the first time.

Fear flashed behind his eyes.

Small.

Real.

It was the first thing he had given her honestly in years.

Caleb stepped away from the suite door.

“Julian.”

“Shut up.”

Caleb’s expression darkened.

“No.”

Julian turned.

Caleb pointed at Claire.

“You told me Diane’s crash had nothing to do with us.”

“It didn’t.”

“You told me the Whitmore woman was protected.”

“She was.”

Claire’s stomach tightened.

Protected by whom?

From what?

Caleb looked at her.

“I never agreed to hurt you.”

Claire’s voice came out cold.

“You agreed to fake a death so he could steal twelve million dollars.”

Caleb flinched.

“That money was mine.”

“Then why fake your death?”

“Because creditors were coming.”

Julian laughed once.

“Don’t pretend morality found you in Montreal.”

Caleb moved toward him.

Harker stepped between them.

The corridor suddenly felt too narrow for all their secrets.

Mateo kept recording.

Julian noticed the red recording icon again.

His voice changed.

“Mateo, your sister Sofia runs a bakery on Ninth Street.”

Mateo went still.

Claire’s blood turned cold.

Julian continued calmly.

“She opens at five-thirty every morning.”

Mateo lowered the phone slightly.

Claire grabbed his wrist.

“Don’t.”

Julian looked at Claire.

“I know everything around you now.”

“That’s the difference between us.”

“You still think evidence protects people.”

Claire stared at him.

“No.”

“I think witnesses protect evidence.”

A door opened behind them.

Vivian stepped into the corridor.

She was not alone.

Conrad Ashford stood beside her with two members of the hotel’s internal security team.

Julian’s face changed.

Vivian looked at Claire.

“Four minutes were up.”

Then she looked at Julian.

“I thought I’d bring witnesses.”

Julian recovered almost instantly.

“Vivian, this is not what you think.”

She laughed quietly.

“You really need new material.”

Conrad’s eyes moved to Harker, then Caleb.

“Who are these men?”

Julian said nothing.

Caleb answered.

“I’m a dead man.”

Conrad stared.

Caleb smiled without humor.

“Apparently this hotel has a loyalty program.”

Harker stepped toward the elevators.

One of Conrad’s security officers blocked him.

“Stay.”

Harker looked at Julian.

Julian did not help him.

Claire noticed.

Everyone connected to Julian was useful until they became expensive.

Vivian moved closer to Claire.

“I found your mother’s letter.”

“I know.”

“She mentioned the ring.”

Claire touched the chain beneath her shirt.

Vivian looked at it.

“You found the box.”

“Yes.”

Julian watched them.

His calm expression fractured.

“What box?”

Neither woman answered.

Conrad turned to his security chief.

“Call the police.”

Harker laughed.

“You might want to choose a precinct carefully.”

Conrad frowned.

Claire remembered Detective Price.

The warrant.

The perfectly forged check.

The USB taken into evidence.

Julian had people inside official channels.

Mara had warned them.

Claire looked at Conrad.

“Not yet.”

Vivian stared at her.

“Why?”

“Because I want Caleb somewhere safe before Julian decides he is more useful dead again.”

Caleb looked at her sharply.

Julian smiled faintly.

“There she is.”

Claire turned.

“The wife I remember.”

“Still trying to save people who helped destroy her.”

Claire felt the insult.

Then she saw what he was doing.

He wanted Caleb ashamed.

Defensive.

Separated from her.

Claire faced Caleb.

“I am not saving you.”

His expression hardened.

“I’m saving your testimony.”

Caleb almost smiled.

Julian’s smile vanished.

Conrad moved everyone into Suite 4108 while his security team secured the floor.

For the first time, Claire saw the room clearly.

A laptop sat open on a dining table.

Beside it were two passports.

One bore Caleb’s photograph under a different name.

The other showed Julian.

Claire moved closer.

The name beneath Julian’s photograph was not Julian Vale.

It was Daniel Mercer.

She stared.

Mateo looked over her shoulder.

“Who’s Daniel Mercer?”

Claire remembered the security company from the USB.

Mercer Protective Services.

She looked at Julian.

“Is Julian Vale even your real name?”

The room went silent.

For the first time, Julian had no immediate answer.

Caleb gave a bitter laugh.

“No.”

Claire turned toward him.

Caleb’s eyes stayed on Julian.

“Julian Vale died twelve years ago.”

Claire felt the floor disappear beneath her.

Caleb continued.

May you like

“And he was the first man Daniel Mercer buried.”
