Chapter 1: The Truth No One Knew

The hallway remained silent as Ethan held the photographs in trembling hands.

He looked from the smiling face of his late brother to Maya, who was desperately trying to gather the pictures before anyone else could see them.

"I'm sorry," Maya whispered. "Lucas never wanted your family to feel guilty. He only wanted you to know... he wasn't alone."

Ethan swallowed hard.

"You knew my brother?"

Maya nodded slowly.

"We met at the rehabilitation center after my accident. I had just lost my leg. Lucas had just begun treatment. We were both angry at the world."

The students surrounding them listened without speaking.

"He used to sneak us hot chocolate from the cafeteria," Maya continued with a faint smile. "He always said hospital food couldn't heal anyone."

A quiet laugh spread through the crowd before fading into silence again.

"He helped me stop blaming myself for surviving."

Her voice cracked.

"And I helped him stop pretending he wasn't afraid."

Ethan stared at the handwriting on the back of the photograph.

She saved me too.

For the first time since Lucas's funeral, Ethan felt as though his brother was speaking directly to him.

The principal arrived moments later with several teachers. Maya was taken to the nurse's office while security reviewed the hallway cameras.

Before leaving, Ethan carefully placed every photograph back into Maya's hands.

"They belong with you," he said softly.

May you like

"No," Maya replied.

"They belong with both of us."
