Chapter 3 — What They Fought For

Chapter 3 — What They Fought For

Two weeks passed in slow recovery.

The doctors adjusted treatment. The baby’s heartbeat remained steady. Mariana’s condition stabilized enough for cautious hope.

Diego changed too.

He still worked, but he never rushed out of the hospital without kissing Mariana’s forehead first. He learned how to track monitor readings, how to talk to nurses without fear, how to sit in silence without imagining worst-case scenarios.

One evening, Mariana looked at him differently.

Not weak. Not guilty.

Just tired.

“I was trying to protect you,” she said again.

Diego pulled a chair closer to her bed.

“I know,” he replied. “But we don’t survive this by protecting each other from truth.”

Mariana let out a slow breath.

“I was scared you’d think I was fragile.”

Diego shook his head.

“No,” he said. “I think you were trying to be strong in a way that almost broke us both.”

That sentence stayed between them for a long time.

Then Diego gently placed his hand over her stomach.

A small movement answered back.

Both of them felt it.

And for the first time since everything began, Mariana smiled.

Not because everything was okay.

But because they had finally stopped facing it alone.

Final Ending — When Love Stops Surviving and Starts Saving

Months later, in the same Chicago neighborhood, the apartment lights were on again.

But this time, they didn’t feel heavy.

They felt like home.

A small crib stood near the window. The city outside still moved fast, still loud, still indifferent—but inside, time had slowed into something softer.

Diego stood by the crib, holding a tiny blanket.

Mariana sat behind him, finally upright, no longer trapped in fear.

The baby slept quietly.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Mariana whispered:

“We almost lost everything.”

Diego nodded slowly.

“Yeah,” he said. “But we didn’t.”

He turned slightly toward her.

“Because we finally stopped hiding from each other.”

Mariana reached out, holding his hand.

Outside, Chicago continued its noise.

Inside, for the first time in a long time, there was peace.

And this time, it was real.
