Chapter 12 - The Man in The Wrong Photograph.

Daniel did not speak for several seconds.

Mateo was the first to move.

He stepped between Daniel and the door.

"Tell me that is wrong."

Daniel looked genuinely confused.

"It is wrong."

Esperanza stood beside Aurelio.

Her hand moved protectively to his shoulder.

Daniel saw it and looked hurt.

"Esperanza."

"I need the truth."

"So do I."

Claire spoke into the phone.

"Detective Mercer, when can we meet Mr. Morales?"

"One hour."

"Police headquarters?"

"No."

His voice lowered.

"Mr. Morales is concerned someone inside the department may have accessed earlier reports."

Daniel gave Mateo a grim look.

Old patterns.

Old fear.

The detective continued.

"We'll use the federal courthouse interview rooms."

Claire agreed.

The call ended.

Mateo remained between Daniel and the door.

"Until we know more, you are not coming."

Daniel stared at him.

"If someone used my name—"

"Then staying here protects you too."

Daniel almost argued.

Then he nodded.

"Fine."

Aurelio watched the surrender.

Daniel had spent days telling everyone else to be cautious.

Now caution had turned on him.

He looked suddenly alone.

Aurelio remembered what that felt like.

He still did not know whether Daniel was innocent.

But uncertainty was not proof.

His grandmother had taught him that too.

"Don't leave," Aurelio said.

Daniel looked at him.

"I won't."

The federal courthouse interview room had beige walls, a metal table, and no charm whatsoever.

Luis Morales looked smaller than Aurelio expected.

He was in his late fifties, with tired eyes and hands that never stopped moving.

Celeste Ward sat beside him.

Aurelio stopped when he saw her.

"You found him."

Celeste nodded.

"He found me first."

Esperanza crossed the room and embraced Luis.

He began crying before she did.

"I'm sorry."

"Luis."

"I failed you."

Esperanza pulled back.

"Start with what happened."

Detective Mercer turned on a recorder after everyone agreed.

Mateo sat beside Aurelio.

Claire sat near the door.

Luis looked directly at the boy.

"I saw you six days after Esperanza disappeared."

Aurelio nodded.

"There's a photograph."

"I know."

Luis's face tightened.

"I was supposed to take you to my sister Marta's home in Oak Glen."

"Why didn't you?"

Luis looked ashamed.

"A man approached me two blocks from the rail platform."

"Daniel?"

Luis shook his head.

"He said he was Daniel Cross."

Mateo leaned forward.

"Describe him."

Luis did.

Mid-forties.

Dark hair.

Thin face.

Scar near the right eyebrow.

Mateo looked at Claire.

"That is not Daniel."

Aurelio exhaled without realizing he had been holding his breath.

Luis continued.

"He showed me a badge from Vargas Security and said the plan had changed."

"He said Aurelio had already been moved because Rourke's people were watching the platform."

Esperanza's face drained.

"And you believed him."

Luis lowered his head.

"I did."

"Where did he send you?"

"A motel outside the city."

"When I got there, nobody was waiting."

Aurelio felt the lost six months settle between them.

One lie.

One false badge.

One adult sent to the wrong place.

That was all it had taken.

"Did you go back?"

Luis nodded.

"The next morning."

"You were gone."

Aurelio remembered that week.

He had moved from the rail platform to a park after two older boys started sleeping near his brick hiding place.

Nobody had known.

Not Luis.

Not Celeste.

Not Esperanza.

Rourke's investigator had found him later because he was paid to watch, not help.

Aurelio looked at his grandmother.

Her face was crumpling under the weight of understanding.

"Grandma."

She looked at him.

"I should have come myself."

"You couldn't."

"I should have."

Aurelio squeezed her hand.

"You taught me that wishing backward doesn't fix forward."

Esperanza laughed through tears.

"I hate when you use my own words against me."

"Mateo does too."

Mateo nodded.

"Constantly."

Detective Mercer gently brought them back.

"Mr. Morales, what happened eleven years ago at St. Vincent?"

Luis looked toward Mateo.

"Julian Vargas came in with chest pain."

Mateo became very still.

"He was stable when I received him."

"He was upset, but alert."

"He kept asking for his brother."

Mateo's eyes dropped.

"Did anyone call me?"

Luis nodded.

"I did."

Mateo looked up sharply.

"I never received a call."

"I left a message with your office."

Daniel had not been Mateo's office manager.

Someone else had controlled those calls.

Claire wrote a name on her notepad.

"Who answered?"

Luis thought.

"A woman named Lillian."

Mateo's face changed.

"Lillian Shaw."

Claire looked at him.

"Who was she?"

"Rourke's niece."

Aurelio stared at him.

"Working in your office?"

"She was my executive assistant for four months."

Daniel had warned him about her, Mateo remembered aloud.

He had ignored the warning because he believed Daniel distrusted everyone connected to Rourke.

Daniel had been right.

Luis continued.

"Julian asked me for paper."

"He wrote a note."

Aurelio leaned forward.

"To who?"

"To you."

The room stopped.

Aurelio's mouth went dry.

"Me?"

Luis nodded.

"He told me he had found proof his son was alive."

"He said if anything happened before he reached you, I was to give the note to Esperanza."

Esperanza covered her mouth.

"You never gave it to me."

Luis shook his head.

"I tried."

His eyes filled.

"That is when I made the mistake that has followed me ever since."

"I put it in Julian's chart for safekeeping."

Mateo closed his eyes.

The chart had later been altered.

Luis nodded as if hearing the thought.

"By morning, the note was gone."

Aurelio whispered.

"What did it say?"

Luis looked at him.

"I only saw the first line."

"What was it?"

Luis took a breath.

"Aurelio, if I have only one chance to tell you who I am, know that I was looking for you."

Aurelio lowered his head.

The room blurred.

Mateo placed one hand on the table near him but did not touch him.

Aurelio reached out and took it himself.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Detective Mercer waited.

Then Luis continued.

"Julian's condition changed after midnight."

"A doctor I did not recognize entered with another administrator."

"I was reassigned to another floor."

"By the time I returned, Julian was unresponsive."

Mateo's grip tightened around Aurelio's hand.

"Did you see the administrator?"

Luis nodded.

"Grant Bell."

Claire looked up sharply.

Rourke's attorney.

The same man who had stood outside Room 417 and insisted the cabinet should remain closed.

Detective Mercer wrote quickly.

"Can you identify him now?"

"Yes."

"Absolutely?"

"Absolutely."

The room went silent again.

Celeste slid a small folder toward Aurelio.

"There is one more thing."

He looked at her.

"I found this with Luis."

Inside was a photocopy of an old visitor log from St. Vincent.

Julian's room had received three visitors that night.

Grant Bell.

Lillian Shaw.

And a third name written at 12:47 a.m.

Aurelio read it twice.

DANIEL CROSS.

Mateo stared at the entry.

"But Daniel says he wasn't there."

Luis leaned forward.

"I saw that man."

"It wasn't Daniel."

Aurelio looked at the copied signature.

Then at the photograph of the fake Daniel described earlier.

An idea formed.

"Someone has been using his name for years."

Detective Mercer nodded slowly.

"That is what it looks like."

Claire's phone buzzed.

She opened a message and went pale.

"We may know who."

She turned her laptop around.

An employee photograph from Rourke Civic Holdings filled the screen.

Dark hair.

Thin face.

Scar near the right eyebrow.

Name: Victor Shaw.

Mateo stared at it.

"Lillian's brother."

Aurelio read the job title beneath the photograph.

Director of Special Projects.

Claire looked at Detective Mercer.

"Victor Shaw used Daniel's identity to redirect Luis six months ago."

"And he appears to have used it at St. Vincent eleven years ago."

Mercer nodded.

"We can move on that."

Aurelio looked at Esperanza.

"Then Daniel wasn't the one who betrayed you."

Esperanza closed her eyes.

"No."

Guilt moved across her face.

Mateo stood.

"We need to tell him."

Before they could leave, Mercer's phone rang.

He answered and listened in silence.

His face changed.

"When?"

Another pause.

"Lock the building."

He ended the call.

Mateo looked at him.

"What happened?"

Mercer stood.

"Someone just entered Claire's office using a maintenance credential."

Aurelio's stomach dropped.

Daniel was still there alone.

Mercer continued.

"The security camera caught the man's face."

May you like

He turned the screen toward them.

Victor Shaw was walking down the hallway toward the conference room where Daniel was waiting.
