Ethan backed away slowly.
"I didn't know," he muttered.
Mia looked at him for a long moment.
"Really?"
She pulled out one final folder.
"I hoped that was true."
Inside were text messages.
Hundreds of them.
She handed them to campus police.
The officer scrolled through the conversations.
One message read:
Dad: We'll use Mia's scholarship money. She'll never find out.
Another:
Mom: Delete everything after the bank transfer.
Then another from Ethan himself.
"Can you send the money this week? I want the upgraded truck."
Gasps echoed through the courtyard.
Ethan's face drained of color.
"I... I didn't think—"
"You didn't think I'd survive," Mia finished.
The officer looked up.
"Sir, ma'am, I'm asking you both to remain here."
Dad laughed bitterly.
"You can't arrest parents for spending family money."
"No," the officer replied.
"But identity theft...
Forgery...
Financial fraud...
Those are different matters."
Her mother grabbed Mia's arm.
"You'd send your own parents to prison?"
Mia gently removed her hand.
"You sent your own daughter into debt before she was old enough to vote."
Her mother's lips trembled.
"We raised you."
"You controlled me."
Dad suddenly pointed toward the audience.
"She was always jealous of Ethan!"
Mia smiled sadly.
"No."
"I was just tired of pretending I mattered less."
The university president stepped forward.
"I've reviewed enough evidence to begin a formal investigation."
He faced the audience.
"Today should have been a celebration of academic achievement."
He looked at Mia.
"And despite everything you've endured...
...it still is."
The crowd began clapping.
One person.
Then ten.
Then hundreds.
Faculty members stood first.
Students followed.
Parents joined them.
Within seconds, the entire courtyard rose to its feet.
