CHAPTER 3 — The Secret Behind the Whitmore Name

CHAPTER 3 — The Secret Behind the Whitmore Name

Three days passed.

Three days of accusations.

Three days of rumors spreading through the city.

The Whitmores used every connection they had.

A newspaper article called me “a disgruntled father involved in a family dispute.”

A television commentator questioned my character.

Friends who once invited us to dinner stopped answering my calls.

They weren’t fighting with facts.

They were fighting with influence.

Then I received a letter.

No return address.

Inside was a handwritten note.

Daniel, you need to know what happened before Claire married you. Meet me at the old church on Elm Street. Come alone. — Someone who knows the truth

I almost threw it away.

But something stopped me.

That evening, I went.

Standing inside the empty church was my father-in-law, Richard Whitmore.

The man who had barely spoken at the gala.

The man who watched everything happen.

He looked exhausted.

Older than I remembered.

“Why are you here?” I asked.

Richard looked down.

“Because I stayed silent too long.”

I said nothing.

He took a deep breath.

“Patricia has always controlled this family.”

Then he revealed something I never expected.

Years earlier, Claire’s younger sister had tried to expose Patricia’s behavior.

She claimed Patricia had abused her emotionally for years.

But the Whitmore family buried the story.

They paid people to stay quiet.

They protected the family image at any cost.

“She doesn’t care about family,” Richard whispered.

“She cares about reputation.”

I felt sick.

“And Claire?”

Richard closed his eyes.

“She learned from her mother.”

Those words hurt more than anything.

Because deep down, I already knew.

Claire didn’t defend Patricia because she was afraid.

She defended her because she believed the same things.

Before I left, Richard handed me a small envelope.

“Someone else is ready to tell the truth.”

May you like

Inside was a name.

Anna Whitmore.
