CHAPTER 3: THE LIFE WE BUILT WITHOUT HIM

Five years later, my life looked completely different.

I owned my own forensic accounting firm.

Dr. Samuel Hart sat on its advisory board.

And my son, Noah, had become the center of my universe.

He was kind.

Curious.

Fearless.

Every morning, he ran into my office shouting, "Mommy!"

The employees adored him.

One afternoon, we attended a charity event supporting single mothers.

As I stepped onto the stage, reporters gathered around.

Someone asked the inevitable question.

"Do you regret everything that happened?"

I looked down at Noah holding my hand.

Then I smiled.

"Not for one second."

Because losing everything forced me to discover who I really was.

Sometimes life doesn't break you.

Sometimes it removes the people who were breaking you all along.

That evening, Noah looked up at me.

"Mommy?"

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"Are we rich now?"

I laughed.

"We're rich in the things that matter."

He tilted his head.

"Like what?"

I knelt beside him.

"Peace."

"Love."

"And having each other."

He grinned.

"That's my favorite kind of rich."

I kissed his forehead.

Then we walked home together beneath a golden sunset.

Not as victims.

Not as survivors.

But as a family that rebuilt itself from ashes.

And somewhere behind us...

May you like

The people who once destroyed our lives had become nothing more than a chapter we no longer needed to read.

The end.
