CHAPTER 2 — The Truth Hidden in the Blue Sewing Box

Daniel drove straight home after leaving the hospital, replaying Elena's final words over and over in his mind.

"Please check the blue sewing box in your mother's closet."

The house was eerily quiet.

Vanessa had already hired a lawyer and left with several designer handbags, convinced she could still control the situation.

Daniel walked into his mother's bedroom.

Inside the closet, tucked beneath folded blankets, sat an old blue sewing box.

His hands trembled as he opened it.

Inside were handwritten letters, prescription bottles that had never been opened, bank statements, and a small flash drive.

The first letter nearly stopped his heart.

"Danny, if you're reading this, something has happened. Elena begged me to tell you sooner, but I was afraid Vanessa would hurt her."

Daniel kept reading.

His mother described months of abuse.

Vanessa routinely withheld medication.

She restricted food.

She disconnected the emergency call button.

She confiscated Daniel's gifts and convinced everyone his mother was developing dementia.

Worst of all, Vanessa forced Elena to sign fake care reports every week.

Whenever Elena refused, Vanessa threatened to have her deported.

Daniel plugged the flash drive into his laptop.

It contained scanned financial records.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars had quietly disappeared from their joint accounts.

Luxury jewelry.

Private vacations.

Cash transfers.

Every transaction led to shell companies controlled by Vanessa's younger brother, Marcus.

This wasn't just elder abuse.

It was organized fraud.

Daniel immediately called Detective Sarah Collins.

"I think this case just became much bigger."
