Chapter 2: The Truth That Had Been Hidden

Chapter 2: The Truth That Had Been Hidden
That night, after Leo's fever finally started coming down, Emily fell asleep on the couch with her head resting on my shoulder.
I carefully covered her with a blanket.
Then my phone buzzed.
It was a message from our next-door neighbor.
I think you should see this.
Attached was a short security camera video.
I pressed play.
The timestamp showed two days earlier.
Emily struggled to carry grocery bags while holding Leo, who was crying in her arms.
My mother walked past her.
Empty-handed.
She looked directly at Emily...
...and kept walking inside.
Minutes later, my sister arrived carrying shopping bags from the mall.
Instead of helping, she laughed, handed one bag to my mother, and the two of them disappeared into the house together.
Emily remained outside.
Alone.
She made three exhausting trips just to bring everything inside while carrying our sick child.
My hands shook.
Then another notification appeared.
This one was from our babysitter.
"I'm sorry. Your mother told me my help wasn't needed anymore."
I immediately called her.
"What happened?"
She hesitated.
"Your mother said she was in charge while you were away. She told me not to come because Emily needed to 'learn how to manage a real household.'"
I closed my eyes.
This wasn't neglect.
It was intentional.
The next morning, I changed every lock on the house.
I canceled the guest access codes.
I removed both my mother and sister from every shared account.
A few hours later, my phone exploded with angry calls.
"You embarrassed us!"
"Family doesn't abandon family!"
"You owe us an apology!"
I listened quietly.
Then I answered only once.
"No."
I hung up.
For the first time in years...
May you like
I didn't feel guilty.
I felt free.
