Emily called Richard repeatedly.
No answer.
She drove toward his downtown office, praying he would believe her.
Halfway there, a black SUV began following her.
Every turn she made...
It followed.
Emily's pulse raced.
The SUV suddenly accelerated.
It slammed into the rear of her car.
Her vehicle spun across the wet road before crashing into a guardrail.
Pain exploded through her body.
She instinctively shielded her stomach.
The SUV stopped only long enough for the driver to look at her.
Then it sped away.
A passing couple rushed to help.
Within minutes, an ambulance arrived.
At the hospital, doctors surrounded Emily.
Richard burst through the emergency room doors just as surgeons wheeled her away.
"What happened?"
Emily grabbed his wrist with surprising strength.
Her voice was barely a whisper.
"It wasn't an accident."
She placed the stolen documents into his shaking hands.
Richard looked down.
His face slowly lost all color.
