Chapter 1: The Truth Behind the Marble Floor

Chapter 1: The Truth Behind the Marble Floor
Silence swallowed the mansion.
The father's briefcase lay forgotten on the polished marble floor.
His eyes moved from his daughter—still kneeling with bruised hands—to the bucket of dirty water beside her.
"What happened here?" he demanded, his voice echoing through the foyer.
His wife stepped forward with a practiced smile.
"Darling, it's just a misunderstanding. Emily insisted on helping the staff. You know how stubborn she can be."
Emily slowly stood, wiping tears from her face.
"No, Dad," she whispered. "She fired every maid two months ago."
The room froze.
"What?"
Emily swallowed hard.
"She said I needed to earn my place in this house. Every morning before school I cleaned the bathrooms. Every afternoon I scrubbed the floors. At night I washed dishes until midnight."
The father's face turned pale.
"And why didn't you call me?"
Emily lowered her head.
"She took my phone."
The older woman's smile finally disappeared.
"She's lying!"
But Emily quietly reached into her apron pocket.
She pulled out a small flash drive.
"I knew one day you'd come home early."
"I copied everything."
The father stared at the tiny device.
"What do you mean... everything?"
"Every security recording she forgot to delete."
For the first time, the stepmother looked genuinely afraid.
