Chapter 6 - The Camera That Blinked.
Marcus found the corporate car forty-seven minutes after Daniel said it had vanished from the tracking system.
A traffic camera caught the black sedan entering the Queensboro Bridge, but the next municipal camera that should have recorded it leaving Manhattan showed fourteen seconds of corrupted footage.
Marcus did not believe in coincidences that lasted fourteen seconds.
Neither did Felix.
He moved the investigation out of the hospital consultation room and into a secure suite on the floor above Lily's room so he could remain close without forcing police, lawyers, and security staff to crowd her bedside.
Sarah stayed with Lily while Felix, Daniel, Marcus, and Detective Ruiz compared what each system could prove.
The disabled tracking command had come from Odette's credential.
Odette insisted she had not used it.
Marcus confirmed her office laptop had been active at the exact minute the command was sent.
That should have ended the argument.
Instead, security footage showed Odette sitting in the Kingsley boardroom at that time with both hands visible on the table.
"Someone cloned the session," Marcus said.
Felix looked at the screen.
"Can that be done?"
"If they had her authentication token."
"Who could get it?"
"An administrator."
Daniel leaned forward.
"Celeste?"
Marcus shook his head.
"Not directly."
"Mara?"
"No."
"The executive health system is managed by a third-party contractor called Aster Vale Solutions."
Felix frowned.
"We pay them?"
"About four million a year."
"Who selected them?"
Marcus looked at the procurement record.
"Celeste chaired the vendor committee eighteen months ago."
Felix stared at him.
The pattern was becoming less like a sudden act of cruelty and more like infrastructure built patiently around his family.
Daniel asked for the vendor's ownership history.
Marcus pulled it up.
Aster Vale had been incorporated in Delaware by a law firm that represented hundreds of companies.
Nothing unusual appeared until he opened the beneficial ownership disclosure prepared for Kingsley's internal compliance team.
A minority investor was listed as Arden Family Holdings.
Felix felt his jaw tighten.
"Celeste owns part of the company that manages our medical records."
"Indirectly," Daniel said.
"Six percent through a family vehicle."
"Did the board know?"
Marcus answered carefully.
"It was disclosed to the procurement committee."
"Who signed the conflict waiver?"
Marcus hesitated.
"Odette."
Felix pushed away from the table.
"Of course she did."
Detective Ruiz raised one hand.
"Conflict of interest is not the same as harming Lily."
"I know."
Felix looked at her.
"But every door I open leads back to someone who was supposed to protect my family from exactly this kind of abuse."
Ruiz received a call from the unit searching Mara's apartment.
She listened without speaking for almost a minute.
Then she ended the call.
"They found a storage key."
"Where?"
"Taped beneath a drawer."
"The unit is in Long Island City."
Felix stood.
Ruiz stopped him.
"You are not coming."
"Detective."
"No."
"This is an active investigation."
"You are a witness, a parent, and a man who already grabbed one suspect by the blouse today."
Felix looked away.
She was right, which irritated him more.
"Then tell me the second you find something relevant to Lily."
"I will."
After Ruiz left, Sarah entered the suite.
She had the teddy bear in a clear hospital bag.
"The allergist wants it tested."
Felix stood.
"Why?"
"Lily started coughing when the nurse moved it from the bed."
Marcus looked at the bag on the table.
The bear seemed harmless.
One ear was darker from years of being held.
The stitched nose had been repaired twice.
A faint dusting of white powder clung near the seam under its arm.
Felix remembered seeing the smear earlier.
"Do not open that bag."
Sarah nodded.
"I wasn't going to."
The hospital lab could not process unknown household contaminants quickly enough, so Ruiz arranged evidence collection and outside testing.
Lily protested when the bear was taken.
She had never spent a night in a hospital without it.
Felix promised he would buy every bear in Manhattan if necessary.
Lily looked offended.
"I don't want every bear."
"I want Button."
"I know."
Felix sat beside her.
"We need to make sure Button didn't pick up something that makes you sick."
"He didn't do anything."
"I'm not blaming him."
Lily thought about that.
"Then don't let the police be mean to him."
Felix promised.
By four o'clock, the hospital had assigned a security officer outside Lily's door and limited visitors to Felix, Sarah, medical staff, Detective Ruiz, and Daniel.
Odette was not on the list.
Celeste had already been barred from the floor.
The restriction did not stop Celeste from controlling the news.
At 4:17, the first entertainment site published photographs of Felix entering the hospital.
At 4:23, a business network reported that he had abandoned a billion-dollar merger vote during a family dispute.
At 4:31, an anonymous source claimed Sarah was exploiting Lily's chronic condition to pressure Felix over ownership rights.
Sarah held up her phone.
"That wording came from the board dinner."
Felix read the article.
Visibly ill child.
Public confrontation.
Financial pressure.
The language was almost identical to Nathaniel Briggs's presentation.
"Celeste."
Sarah nodded.
"Or her lawyer."
Felix called Daniel.
"I want a statement."
Daniel walked in from the hallway.
"Saying what?"
"That Lily is receiving medical care after a documented allergic reaction."
"That her parents are cooperating with law enforcement."
"And that anyone who tries to turn a child's medical emergency into corporate leverage should be prepared to explain themselves under oath."
Daniel considered it.
"That last sentence is going to cause a fire."
"Good."
Sarah stopped him.
"No."
Felix looked at her.
"You want silence?"
"I want accuracy."
"If you sound angry, they will make the story about you."
She was right again.
Felix hated how much the day required him to let other people be right.
Sarah dictated a shorter statement.
It named no suspect and no company.
It asked for privacy and confirmed only that Lily was stable.
Within ten minutes, the tone of coverage shifted.
Then Celeste called.
Felix stared at her name on the screen.
Sarah reached for the phone.
"Put it on speaker."
Daniel began recording after confirming New York's one-party consent rule allowed Felix to record his own conversation.
Felix answered.
"What?"
Celeste sounded calm.
"I am giving you one chance to stop this before you destroy yourself."
"You should be speaking to Detective Ruiz."
"I already did."
"Through counsel."
"Because I am not stupid."
"No."
Felix looked through the glass wall at Lily's room below.
"You are worse than stupid."
"You are convinced you understand what happened because Lily told you a story while frightened and medicated."
Sarah's face hardened.
Felix kept his voice even.
"Mara delivered almond cookies with a false label."
A pause.
"I did not know what was in them."
"You held Lily's medication pouch."
Another pause.
"The nurse handed it to me when she was overwhelmed."
"Which nurse?"
Celeste did not answer.
Felix continued.
"You called Marcus before the school called us."
"I was there."
"Exactly."
Celeste's control slipped.
"Because I was trying to stop your daughter from detonating another day of your life."
No one in the room moved.
Felix spoke softly.
"Say that again."
Celeste caught herself.
"You know what I mean."
"I know exactly what you mean."
"Felix, every time Lily coughs, you cancel flights."
"Every time Sarah calls, you leave meetings."
"Every time that child is frightened, our life disappears."
Sarah closed her eyes.
Celeste continued before Felix could respond.
"I wanted one normal day."
"One meeting where a symptom did not become a catastrophe."
"One decision where you chose the future we were building."
Felix stared at the recorder icon on Daniel's phone.
"So you went to her school."
"I went to talk to her."
"You let her eat something she said was unsafe."
"I believed the updated chart."
"The chart changed through a vendor your family owns."
Silence.
That was the first time Celeste sounded surprised.
"What?"
Felix looked at Daniel.
Daniel's expression changed too.
Celeste either had not expected him to know, or she genuinely did not understand what he was saying.
"Aster Vale Solutions," Felix said.
"Arden Family Holdings owns six percent."
"My father invested in hundreds of healthcare companies."
"Then you should know which one manages my daughter's records."
"I didn't."
Felix could not tell if she was lying.
Celeste's next sentence came colder.
"Ask your mother who recommended them."
The call ended.
Marcus stared at the phone.
"That sounded like she knew something."
Felix nodded.
"Or wanted us to think she did."
A message arrived from Detective Ruiz.
STORAGE UNIT OPENED.
FOUND SCHOOL SUPPLIES, KINGSLEY FOUNDATION BADGES, AND MULTIPLE EXPIRED AUTO-INJECTORS.
A second message followed.
ALSO FOUND A LAPTOP.
